Oh Fall, I just love you so much.
Fall is hands down my favorite season. I’m thankful I can go outside without being drenched in sweat from Southern humidity. I love the colors, the crisp mornings, and ALL things pumpkin spice (yes, I totally fall for anything flavored such). Fall also is a great time to read books. All cozy by the fireplace or enjoying nature without the mosquitos. So grab your kiddos, a blanket, and enjoy one of these great books together!

- Johnny Appleseed – A Poem by Reeve Lindbergh
There is no shortage of Johnny Appleseed tales out there. This one is by far my favorite as it focuses on the faith, simplicity, and adventures of the real John Chapman. The poetry is delightful to read aloud and the illustrations are detailed and beautifully painted.
Tasha Tudor, need I say more? Her tales and illustrations are always so dang adorable. This simple tale of a run away pumpkin is no different.
This classic fall tale contains beautiful muted illustrations, simple text that is great for beginning readers, and the steps for the pumpkin life cycle.
In this precious story a farmer grows a pumpkin and then turns it into a jack-o-latern. In the process, students are reminded of the new life we have in Christ and the privilege to shine their light in a dark world.
Gail Gibbons is one of my favorite children’s authors. Her nonfiction books are great for the K-2 set, large and detailed illustrations draw kids in while teaching them information.
This oversized book has Ehlert’s traditional large photographic images and unique paper shapes. In this story, various leaves are positioned to show all the animals and landscapes that the leaf passes as it is blown away. This book always inspires children to collect leaves and make their own “leaf man.”
In the tradition of We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, this rhyme has students wandering through the forest finding different types of leaves. A great read before going out for a leaf hunt of your own.
This couple has written/illustrated many wonderful books for young children, and this book is no exception. I love the “Let’s Read and Find Out Science” books as they explain scientific topics in a way children can understand without talking down to them.
This books tells the story of a town who all works together at the orchard for the apple harvest. The little girl works hard to fill her basket. Great illustrations and the focus on family, make this book a great addition to your Fall book basket.
Colorful collage illustrations tell the story of an apple tree in various seasons. Finally, it is harvest time and time to make an apple pie. Great to teach the apple tree cycle to little folks.
My Favorite Thanksgiving Books
- Squanto and the Miracle of Thanksgiving by Eric Metaxas
The true story of Squanto and God’s provision to bless the dying Pilgrims. My kids instantly made the connection between Squanto’s story and the Biblical narrative of Joseph. This is a book we read ever year as an important reminder of all we have to be thankful for.
By kids love all the books in this series. If your child, has lots of questions about the first thanksgiving, hand them this book.
The others in this series, Samuel Eaton’s Day and Tapenum’s Day, are also read-worthy.
If you have read any of my curriculum, you know I love Dalgleish. She is such an incredible children’s author. She makes history come alive.
