My Favorite Spring Children’s Books

Oh Spring. I am so glad you have arrived. The dreary days of Winter hang on my soul. Getting out in the sunshine, looking at the beautiful flowers, and hearing the return of the birds’ songs are so delightful. It also means it is time to replace the seasonal books in my picture book basket. I talk in this post about how I keep those all organized.

Now onto the book recommendations…..

Favorite Easter Books

  1. The Easter Egg by Jan Brett. Jan Brett is one of my all time favorite children’s authors and illustrators. This tale doesn’t disappoint. Beautiful illustrations bring this heart-warming tale to life.

2. The Parable of the Lily by Liz Curtis Higgs is a precious tale for Easter with a great object lesson for the little ones.

3. The Legend of the Easter Egg by Lori Walburg- This story is written by the folks that brought us The Legend of the Candy Cane. This is my favorite Easter story.

4. The Easter Story by Carol Heyer is the true Easter account told with magnificent illustrations.

5. Rechneka’s Eggs by Patricia Polacco. Patricia Polacco is another one of my all time favorite children’s picture book authors and illustrators. Her stories are full of family, sacrifice, and love. This story is no different. Highlighting the Ukrainian style of egg making, this story can lead to a great Geography lesson.

6. The Egg Tree by Katherine Milhous is a classic Easter story highlighting the Pennsylvania Dutch. This book won the Caldecott Medal for a reason. The illustrations and story are delightful.

7. The Golden Egg Book by Margaret Wise Brown is the perfect book for the toddler/preschool crowd, written by the beloved author of Goodnight Moon.

8. The Country Bunny and the Little Golden Shoes by DuBose Heyward is the classic story of Cottontail who even after having 21 baby bunnies desires to become the Easter Bunny. If you have a little girl in your family with big dreams, this book is for them!

9. The Tale of Three Trees by Angela Elwell Hunt

Favorite Spring Picture Books

1. Tops and Bottoms by Janet Stephens is the hilarious tale of a lazy bear and an industrious and clever rabbit who grow vegetables in their gardens. I love how this book opens vertically and through a living story teaches the different parts of the plants that we eat.

2Marshmallow by Clare Turlay Newberry is the classic true tale of Oliver the cat and Marshmallow the bunny who become unexpected friends. This book is truly endearing!

3. The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter is the timeless tale of a mischievous little bunny in Mr. McGregor’s garden.

4. Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey is another Caldecott Medal winner. First published in 1941, this tale of a mother duck and her babies making their way through the streets of Boston has been a beloved tale ever since.

5. I Wish I Was a Butterfly by James Howe was one of favorite stories to read to my Kindergarten class. The illustrations are incredible. The story is one of a cricket who believes she is ugly based on some unkind words from a spider and wishes to be a butterfly. I love this story for its important message of being content with who God designed us to be.

6. The Dandelion Seed by Joseph Anthony is a great tale to explain how seeds are dispersed for all those little ones obsessed with blowing the white seeds from these weeds.

7. Waiting for Wings and Planting a Rainbow by Lois Ehlert- These books are perfect for the toddler/preschool crowd with their simple text and big, bright illustrations.

8. Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney is the heart warming tale of a woman who wants to make her world a more beautiful place only to discover that she can plant lupine seeds to accomplish her goal.

9. The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle is a great book for teaching your children about how seeds grow.

10. The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams is the classic tear jerker story of a boy who loves a bunny enough to make him real.

11. The Teddy Bears’ Picnic by Jimmy Kennedy is the famous children’s song matched with beautiful paintings. It certainly necessitates a picnic with teddy bears when you are finished reading!

Favorite Spring Chapter Books

1. The Green Ember by S.D.Smith- If your family hasn’t read this adventurous tale of a family of bunnies, you are missing out. All ages will truly enjoy this story. The audiobook is equally fantastic! (If you buy the kindle version, you can add on the audible audio narration for free)

2. The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett- This classic tale should be a part of every little girl’s childhood. The BBC has a lovely dramatized audio version.

3. The Burgess Bird Book by Thornton Burgess- In this classic tale all the birds return to Old Orchard in the Spring. Peter Rabbit, with the help of Jenny Wren, learns all about the different species of birds in this living nature lore book.

4. Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White is at the top of the children’s literature list for a reason. I always delight to read about Wilber, Charlotte, and all their farmyard friends.

5. Winnie the Pooh by A. A. Milne is a fantastic read aloud that your younger children will enjoy. If all they know is the Disney version of the 100 Acre Woods, they are missing out.

6. The Wind and the Willows by Kenneth Grahame is the classic tale of the adventures of rat, mole, toad, and many other woodland friends. The language in this book is rich and full of imaginative details! I love this illustrated edition. The audiobook is also wonderful.

May your Spring be filled with beautiful books!
